Of course:

1. Ignore the problem.
2. Write a stand-alone auto folder utility for those people who REALLY
   need such things.
3. Add a 'save desktop.inf' option to an already existing DA (as I did
   for my harddisk software).

By the way: what about 'patching' CBHD and calling it CBHD 3.6??? This
would be the same thing Claus did to Allan Pratt and his Poolfix...

Subject: Atari ST->MAC->IBM compatibility

I am considering buying a new computer this summer (I have an Atari 400 now).

I would like to know exactly how compatible you can make an ST
with Macintosh and/or IBM.  I know it is possible to run some
softwares, but exactly what can and cannot you do with the
emulators.  Also, I plan to go shopping in the Chicagoland area,
and where would be the best place to go looking for an entire
ST system at good prices.

On a subject totally (almost) seperate from the ST list I am constructing!!

Does anyone anywhere (but preferably the UK) know anything about setting up
your own UUCP site on either an ST or (horrors!) another type of machine!?

When I finish college I would like to have a crack at getting set up, as
I shall be in a highly paid job and looking for ways to spend my money (wife
permitting! :-)

Netters,

As many of you may now have realised, I am in the process of trying to
construct a list of ST users around the world, so that those of us who
will soon have no Email access can still keep in touch!

On this point I would like to ask all those who have posted to me asking to
join the list to repost to me if they have not received a copy of the list
to this date (17th April 1990) as I have just distributed an updated version!

        Well, whats this Atari TT buisiness I keep hearing about ?
I hear that it runs Unix (if so who's and what ver), has vga equivilent
graphics, and is dirt cheap.  Could some one fill me in on this beast
before I loose my cool and go out and buy an Amiga ?

Subject: New GDOS

I just read in the April 1990 issue of Current Notes (this is
in the ST Update article) that Atari will be releasing a new
version of GDOS...The article on page 11 says that "Atari is
totally redoing GDOS and may issue it as soon as this summer."
I was just wondering if anybody knows anything about this,
and/or what are the ramifications of a new GDOS?  For example,
I was hoping to buy G+Plus soon...but should I wait for a new
version that is will be more like the newer version of GDOS?
Will programs that use GDOS now, e.g. WordUp, be able to
handle the new GDOS?

I guess the stock answer to some of these questions would be:
If the new GDOS is compatible with the original, and if
programs handle the current GDOS in a "legal" manner, then
everything will be OK.  But are there other things to
consider?...I just don't know that much about these things.

If this has already been discussed extensively, I guess
there's no need to post to the net, and you can email me
directly.  Otherwise, posting to the net will be just fine.

One last thing...notice that this is the April issue of
CN...is there any possibility that this is an April-fool type
thing.  I am being serious when I say I have no idea...it is
so hard to tell what is going when it comes to matters like
this.  Thanks.

Don't tell me they screwed up again!!! What if I have a volume with
10K free and I want to move a 20K file into a folder?!?! Doesn't it just
modify the directory entries instead of actually copying the folders?
Seems kind'a silly to require a disk to have (2x)K free just to move a
file that is (x)K bytes long, right?

To *ALL* Atari ST owners worldwide!

Are you interested in becoming involved in a snail mail list of ST
users? I know that most of you will be like me and quite happy using
the Email facilities at your site, but spare a thought for us final
year students who will soon be losing all access to such facilities if
the company we join has not got network links!! (Arrgghh, too horrid to
consider!). So to get around this I was wondering if any of you would
like to help me get a list together of interested parties who could then
keep in touch and prevent themselves losing touch with the ST community
at large (this would be especially easy if someone who still had net
access could summarise current topics or forward news and advice!)

I'm not thinking of anything major league for the entries on the list,
just sort of name, address, interests and optionally a few lines about
yourself.

eg     Simon Chappell.
       [e-mail] (goes away after June)
       51 Amherst Road, Penny-Come-Quick, Plymouth, Devon, PL3 4HJ. UK.
       C, operating systems (UNIX, VMS) & relational databases.

This would be roughly what my record would read, so if you are interested
compose something for yourself along the above lines (you can have 5 lines
of text about your self if you want! :-) and send it to me either by Email
(until June) or at the above address (anytime). I am working now on a list
for the UK and when both lists are complete I will Email a copy to everyone
that wants one.

I hope that this generates a reasonable level of interest, so don't be shy!
Contact me sooner rather than later and lets all keep in touch! :-)
